This unit of learning is designed to equip the trainee with the mathematical knowledge, skills, and attitudes required to perform basic engineering calculations and solve problems in a civil engineering context. It serves as the foundation for structural analysis, surveying, and fluid mechanics.
Upon successful completion of this unit, the trainee will be able to:
Apply Algebraic Identities: Solve linear and quadratic equations and work with partial fractions.
Use Logarithms and Indices: Simplify complex engineering formulas using logarithmic laws.
Perform Trigonometric Calculations: Apply sine and cosine rules to solve for distances and angles in surveying and structural layouts.
Work with Coordinate Geometry: Calculate gradients, midpoints, and distances between points on a site plan.
Apply Statistics: Organize and interpret construction data using measures of central tendency (mean, median, mode).
Competency will be assessed through:
Continuous Assessment Tests (CATs)
Practical mathematical modeling assignments
Final Summative Examination
